A raw crystal standing in moss on a turned wooden base, with dried flowers around it and a glass dome over the whole thing. Nothing in it has been cut into a shape: the stone arrives the way it came out of the rock, with broken faces rather than polished ones, and the dome is there so it stays that way. It is 3.1 inches across and 5.0 inches tall with the dome on, and it weighs 7.4 oz — a desk object, not a shelf piece.

Record
Catalogue number
M-110
Dimensions
3.1 in across the base, 5.0 in tall with the dome on. 7.4 oz.
Material
Raw crystal, preserved moss, dried flowers, turned wood base, glass dome. Five materials, none of them printed.
Stone
Chosen when you order. Nineteen in all — thirteen on the larger base, six on the smaller.
Power
None. Nothing to plug in, nothing to charge, no switch. Nothing in it can stop working.
The dome
Lifts straight off by hand. It is not glued down and it is not clipped, so the stone can be taken out and put back.
Best hour
Morning, on a surface that gets light from the side. Under a ceiling bulb a raw crystal reads flat, because a broken face needs a low angle to catch.
Placement
A desk, a windowsill or a shelf you pass close to. At 5 inches it is an object you look down at, not across a room.
Varies by unit
The crystal is broken out of rock rather than shaped. No two points have the same silhouette, and none of them will match the photograph.
Delivery
6 to 10 days. 1 to 3 to pack, 5 to 8 in transit.
In the box
The base with its stone, the glass dome, the maker’s white gift box and a free Thinker Figure.
What this object does not do
  • It does not light up. Like the Prism Cube, it has no electrical part in it anywhere.
  • It is not alive. The moss is preserved and the flowers are dried — nothing is watered, nothing grows, nothing dies on you.
  • It will not match the photograph. The stone is broken out of rock, so the point under your dome is a different shape from the one in the picture.
  • It is small. Five inches tall is a desk object, not something that holds a shelf on its own.
  • The dome is glass. It travels in a fitted carton, and it is still glass.
How it works
  • The dome does the framingA bell jar is the object museums use to say “specimen”. Put anything under one and the eye stops reading it as decoration and starts reading it as a thing being kept. That single move is most of this object.
  • The moss gives the stone a floorSet straight on wood, a crystal reads as dropped there. Standing in moss it reads as found somewhere, which is the difference between an ornament and a specimen.
  • Nothing is polishedOne cut face would turn it into jewellery. Broken faces sit at random angles, so they catch light unevenly and never all at once — which is exactly why they are worth keeping.

Between paying and holding it

Six to ten days, drawn out in full.

  1. Today The order is placed Payment is taken once. Mauna does not keep the card.
  2. It is packed and handed over One to three days. Most orders leave inside two.
  3. It travels, and you can watch it The tracking number is emailed the day the label is printed, before the parcel moves.
  4. It is at your door Anywhere in the fifty states, Alaska and Hawaii included. No signature needed.

Mauna has no warehouse in the United States, so nothing here arrives in two days. That is the trade: the objects cost what they cost because the store did not build a building.

Is anything in it alive?

No. The moss is preserved and the flowers are dried, so there is nothing to water and nothing that can die on you. It looks the same in a year as it does on the day it arrives.

How big is it, really?

3.1 in across the base and 5.0 in tall with the dome on, at about 7.4 oz. That is a desk object you look down at, not something that fills a shelf. The smaller base version is smaller again.

Will the crystal look like the photograph?

The color will, the shape will not. Every point is broken out of rock rather than cut, so the silhouette under your dome is its own. Nineteen stones are offered and you get the one you chose.

Does it light up?

No. There is no bulb, no cable, no battery and no switch. It works on the light the room already has, which is why side light does far more for it than a ceiling bulb.

Does the glass dome come off?

Yes. It lifts straight off by hand — nothing is glued and nothing clips. Mauna would still leave it on: an open arrangement of moss and small stones collects dust in about a week.

Which stone should I take?

Choose by the surface it will stand on rather than by the name. The pale ones — pink crystal, white crystal, pink opal — disappear on light wood. The dark ones — lapis lazuli, tiger eye, moss agate — hold their edge against it.

Mauna does not write its own, does not buy them, and does not copy them from a supplier’s page. When one arrives it carries the unit number of the box it came out of, so you can tell it from a stranger on the internet.
