Mauna does not manufacture. Every object in the catalogue was made by someone else and chosen here. This page states what an object has to be before it is chosen, so that the choosing can be checked against something.
Seven conditions- It has to do somethingNot decorate — do. Throw light, split light, change color, hold a scene. An object that only sits there is not considered, however good it looks.
- It has to be honest about its conditionsIf it needs a window, the page says so. If it does nothing on a cloudy day, the page says that too. Every object in the catalogue publishes what it does not do.
- It has to survive the journeyGlass and resin travel badly. An object that arrives damaged more than rarely is withdrawn, whatever it costs.
- It has to be worth its price without the storyIf an object needs a paragraph of writing to justify $90, it is not worth $90. The writing explains an object; it does not rescue one.
- It cannot imitate anyoneNo licensed characters, no copies of another maker’s design, no film or television properties. This rule has already cost Mauna three of the most commercially attractive objects it has been offered.
- It has to belong somewhereEvery object belongs to a place in a house — a windowsill, a nightstand, a desk. If it belongs nowhere, it goes into a set or it does not enter.
- Its photograph has to be Mauna’s to useAn object whose only available photographs carry another shop’s watermark or logo does not enter until there are clean ones. Selling under somebody else’s mark is the same failure as condition 05, one step further down the chain.
The catalogue is short on purpose. These were offered, considered and turned down, with the reason.
- Three resin lamps using characters from film franchisesRejected under condition 05. All three were among the most commercially attractive objects available, and the last of them was withdrawn on the day it was imported. None is licensed, and Mauna does not sell unlicensed merchandise.
- A resin lamp of dragons attacking a castleRejected under condition 06, and a second time under 05 once the castle was looked at properly. Legally doubtful, well made, and it belongs nowhere in a house.
- A set of three skeleton shelf figuresRejected under condition 01. It is a joke, and a joke stops working after the first time you look at it.
- A knight’s tankard and a gauntlet gobletRejected under condition 06. They belong to a different shop.
- A yellow ceramic handRejected under condition 01. It does nothing.
Any object already in the catalogue that stops meeting these conditions is withdrawn and marked closed in the record. Conditions are added to this page, never quietly removed — condition 07 was added in August 2026, after an object arrived carrying another studio’s logo in its photographs.
