The register

Every order Mauna ships is assigned two numbers, and both are emailed to you the day the box leaves. The first is the object’s catalogue number. The second is the unit number — which copy of that object yours is. Together they name one physical thing in the world, and they are never issued twice.

The first hundred orders Mauna ships form the founding register. Their entry carries a third mark — the founding number, 001 through 100 — and once the hundredth is packed the register closes for good. Orders after it still get a unit number. They do not get a founding one.

1. The number is yours, and it exists once001 is issued to one order and never again. It arrives in writing, from Mauna, on the day that box leaves.
2. The warranty follows the number, not the receiptIf something goes wrong inside the thirty days, the number is the whole claim. No order number to dig up, no email to find, no proof of purchase to produce.
3. First refusal on every new catalogue numberWhen an object passes the standard, the founding register is told before it is listed. Not a newsletter — the list of a hundred people, first.
4. Entered in the record, if you want to beYour number and the date it was assigned go into the record either way. Whether your first name and state sit beside it is your decision, and you can change it later.

Because a shop that cannot tell you which unit you own is a shop that has not looked at what it sells. Museums number what they accession. Instrument makers number what they build. It is not decoration — it is the difference between a catalogue and a pile.
