In Sanskrit, mauna is silence — not the absence of sound, but the kind you choose. The quiet you go looking for when the day has been loud.

That is the filter. An object gets a catalogue number here when it can make a room quieter to be in and still give you something to look at: the floor of the ocean, an orbit above the Earth, the inside of a beam of sunlight. In space there is no sound at all — sound needs air to travel through and there isn’t any — which makes it the most silent place that exists. Mauna puts a piece of it on a nightstand.

The store is quiet and the objects are not. Nothing on these pages is orange unless something is happening there.

What is here

Six objects. One runs on sunlight and five run on a plug. Every one of them carries a catalogue number, and every number is published on the record with the date the object entered. Objects that are withdrawn stay on that page, marked closed. Nothing is deleted.

There is also a page listing the objects that were turned down, with the reason each one failed. Three resin lamps using characters from film franchises. A dragon attacking a castle. A set of skeletons. A yellow ceramic hand. Every one of them was available, several would have sold well, and none of them passed.

What Mauna is not
Mauna does not manufacture anything

Every object was made by someone else and chosen here, and the choosing is the whole product. A shop that lists whatever its supplier has is not curating, it is forwarding.

Mauna also does not have a warehouse. Objects leave the workshop that makes them and go straight to your address, which is why delivery takes six to ten days instead of two. That is the honest cost of not adding a step in the middle, and it is written on every product page before you buy rather than discovered afterwards.
